The Movement Guide

I didn't think much while I was developing the game, but the higher skill floor of this game and the lack of a proper tutorial could really make the game quite unenjoyable for new players. This is why I'm making this guide to show you some techs and tips.

The Basics

A, D are run, space bar is jump, mouse left click and right click are different weapons. These are all mentioned in the description, but in case if you missed them, now you know.

Also, left-click light attack can only hit dark creatures, and right-click dark attack can only hit light creatures and their projectiles.

Still Basics but They Are Less Obvious

Flashlight Boosted Jump: When you use your light attack, you'll receive a very strong recoil in the opposite direction you are shooting. The recoil is so strong that you can use it to jump very high, or far, or both. In order to jump for the max height, you should press jump button and shoot vertically to the ground at the same time.

Dark Whip Boosted Jump (I referred this attack as Dark Beam but my college friend called it this way and it sounds much cooler): This one is an odd one. Just like the light counterpart, this attack can also boost your movement in its own way. However, instead of giving you a recoil, this attack pulls you closer to the wall, ceiling or ground it hit, and the amount of force depends on the distance between you and the piece of wall/ceiling/ground that got hit. The closer you are to the wall/ceiling/ground, the stronger the pulling force is. Just like the light counterpart, you should jump and shoot at the same time. Overall, this attack is pretty unintuitive and I'll probably try to fix this first if I'm going to turn this into a full game.

Coyote Jump: This is a quality of life feature that every platformer should have. What this feature does is that you are able to jump after you have just run off a ledge. What makes it so different in this game is that it also works when you are boost jumping. This mean that you don't always have to press jump button right before pressing attack button. You can also press jump button after pressing attack button.

Reducing Recoil: Your character has very high turn speed, and using a weapon doesn't change that. This means that as long as you are holding the direction key in the opposite direction the recoil/pulling force is applied, you wouldn't get knocked away very far. Remember not to hold the wrong direction key when you try to go fast!

The Obscure things

Ceiling Climbing: As my last minute decision to make the dark whip attack even weirder, I decided to also make it break your falling before the pulling force is applied. This means that you can stay mid-air forever or even elevate yourself just by spamming dark attack to the ceiling/wall, as long as you are close enough to the said ceiling/wall. This trick is vital in the last section of the bonus area, but it may also be used to cheese many other sections.

Sliding: When you are holding a direction key, your horizontal velocity will never drop no matter whether you are mid-air or on the ground unless you hit something in the face or you got pushed in the opposite direction. This means that given enough space, you can build up crazy speed and skip through lots of areas.
